Mar-a-Lago

The Mar-a-Lago estate, where US President Donald Trump and China’s Xi Jinping will meet on April 6 and 7, is a luxurious waterfront mansion in Palm Beach, Florida.

The US$200 million property, which Trump has dubbed the “Southern White House”, spans almost 7 hectares.

It has 128 rooms in all, including 58 bedrooms and 33 bathrooms, as well as three bomb shelters.

It also features two pools, a club, a ballroom, a spa, tennis and croquet courts, and even a secret tunnel that leads to the beach.

Some of these were added after Trump, then a property developer, bought the estate for US$10 million in 1985.

The mansion, which combines Spanish, Moorish, Portuguese and Venetian styles, was completed in 1927.

Its name, Mar-a-Lago, is a Spanish reference to the estate’s location between the sea and a lake.

The resort belonged to Marjorie Merriweather Post, the heiress to the Post cereal company.  When she died in 1973, she left the property to the US government, envisioning it as a “winter White House” for state leaders.

But upkeep proved too costly and it was sold to Trump 12 years later.

Though Mar-a-Lago might seem a perfect getaway, Chinese President Xi Jinping will spend the night elsewhere during his US trip.  He will likely stay at the Eau Palm Beach Resort some 10km south of Mar-a-Lago.

In the day, Xi will meet Trump at Mar-a-Lago.  Where exactly their meetings will take place have not been revealed.  When Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe visited in February, he and Trump dined on the public terrace and played golf on the course.

Others permitted to visit Mar-a-Lago are a select few who can afford its US$200,000 entrance fee and US$14,000 annual membership payment.  Every 50 new sign-ups pay back Trump’s cost of buying the $10 million property.

The club is so exclusive that it has a limit of 400 members.  These members have access to the mansion’s more than 30 guest rooms, some costing over US$1,000 a night to stay.

The club also often hosts lavish weddings, including Trump's most recent to first lady Melania, and his son Donald Jr’s wedding to Vanessa Haydon.

In the run-up to the Xi-Trump summit, local authorities will block roads to the estate and the US coast guards will patrol the waters nearby.

A mile-wide no-fly zone will also be in place around Mar-a-Lago, as the mansion is within the flight path of a runway in Palm Beach Airport.

The costs of ensuring security in the area have been a point of contention among US politicians.
