Christy Yiu Kit-ching

Predominantly a middle-distance runner, Christy Yiu switched to marathon as Olympic qualification is easier. She holds local records in 3,000m steeplechase, 10km, 15km and half-marathon. She quit her job as a nurse to focus full-time on athletics in 2015, with almost immediate dividends as she sealed her place at Rio with a time of 2:38.24 at the Prague Marathon in May of that year (finishing 11th). Targeting a top-30 finish.

After setting the HK record, Chan won overseas titles in Geneva and Nivelles, Belgium with 7.92m and 7.78m and the Singapore Open (7.99m). Still only 21, this Games will be about experience before he sets his sights on Tokyo 2020.

A member of the Hong Kong team since 2006, this will be Yip's third Olympics. She has sometimes struggled to cope with the pressure of being seen as HK's great hope, but reached the quarter-finals at London 2012, equalling Hong Kong's best Olympic record. Her big passion is baking and she runs a cake shop in Tai Koo.

Meng Zhaojuan

A serious injury during training in January ended Meng’s hopes of representing Hong Kong in the women’s road race at the Rio Games. But thanks to teammate Sarah Lee’s qualification in two track events, Meng has been given the other slot as a reserve for Lee. The former mainlander was hit by one of her teammates while training in Izu, Japan just days before the Asian Championships and was once in danger of ending her career prematurely. A speedy recovery saw Meng resume competition in May but barring injury to Lee she has little chance of featuring.

Vivian Kong Man-wai

Kong is the only fencer from Hong Kong who has made it to Rio by virtue of her world ranking and has the biggest chance to win the first match for Hong Kong at the Olympic Games, especially as there are a lot of uncertainties in epee. Her coach Octavian Zidaru, former technical director of Romania Fencing Association, also praises the youngster, saying Kong, who won a bronze medal in the World Cup series in Italy in May, has made tremendous improvement over the past couple of months. Kong went for the test event in Rio in April and found the conditions very good for her, hopefully that will give her an added advantage as her parents will also be in Rio to support her.

No doubt a new fencing star for Hong Kong following his impressive performance at the recent Asian Championships when the youngster clinched the men's individual foil gold medal after defeating a series of top fencers including the London Games champion and 2015 world champion. Experience in Rio should certainly stand the teenager in good stead for Tokyo.

Sonia Lo Sin-lam

Lo pulled off a big surprise when she beat teammate Hayley Chan Hei-man for the only berth in the women’s RS:X for Rio. Chan came 12th at the London Olympics despite a serious injury during training prior to the Games and was the favourite to win her second Olympic spot again until she suffered a big defeat to Lo in the last race at the World Championship in February. Lo will now need to prove her selection win over Chan is not a fluke but it won’t be easy for her against the world’s best. Windsurfing remains the only event in which Hong Kong has won a gold medal at the Olympics.

Stephanie Au Hoi-shun

Au represented Hong Kong at both the Beijing and London Olympics and also stands a great chance of making it in the 100 metre backstroke for Rio. She bolstered her hopes by clinching a silver medal in the 50 metre back (a non-Olympic event) at last year’s World University Games in South Korea, but despite coming close to the 1:00.25 qualifying benchmark on a number of occasions, she failed to do so. She qualifies for Rio by dint of the team's medley relay result (4:03.10) at the Malaysia Open. Au – who will be Hong Kong's flagbearer at the opening ceremony – now hopes they can break the Hong Kong record of the event that stands at 4:03.07 set at the 2009 East Asian Games by Sherry Tsai Hiu-wai, Yvette Kong Man-yi, Sze Hang-yu and Hannah Wilson.

While the two Chinese players – world number one Ma Long and defending champion Zhang Jiki – are in a class of their own in the singles, Wong stands a good chance of bagging the bronze medal as he has beaten most of the remaining players on the world tour. With veteran Tang Peng and up-and-coming Ho Kwan-kit, they are also likely to do well in the team event which features only 16 countries. Wong only turned to full-time training at the age of 18 showing it is never too late if you have the commitment and determination.

They were beaten again by Germany in the bronze medal playoff. It was a big disappointment for the Hong Kong team and Tang is going to use his last chance to secure a medal in Rio. Two years ago, Ho, then just 17, became the first player to win a world tour men’s singles title without a world ranking when he stunned top seed Zhan Jian of Singapore in the Philippines Open final. The youngster had been training in China with Club Luneng in Shandong before that and his performance has since caught the eye of the Hong Kong team. The youngster eventually was preferred to veteran Jiang Tianyi, the quarter-finalist at the 2012 London Olympics, for Rio. Ho will feature only in the team event and it will be a huge learning experience for the young player before the next Olympics in Tokyo.

Doo Hoi-kem

The latest homegrown talent to have come through the ranks, 19 year-old Doo is no doubt the future of Hong Kong table tennis, provided the youngster can maintain her progress and take control of the emotion that affects her on and off the field. A member of the junior development programme of the Hong Kong Table Tennis Association, Doo emerged as a star of the new generation when she captured two medals at the 2014 Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing. At the Asian zone Olympic qualification tournament in April, the home player pulled off a huge upset by defeating world number one Liu Shiwen of China in the second round. The Rio Olympics will be another chance for her to prove herself against the world’s best.

Lee Ho-ching

Despite her youth, Lee is making her second trip to the Olympics after helping Hong Kong to a quarter-final berth in London four years ago. She was only the team’s number three then but now Lee may have to shoulder the responsibility as she was preferred to veteran Jiang Huajun for both team and individual events. She had an exceptional German Open, a super series on the world tour, early this year, beating a number of top players including London Olympics bronze medallist Feng Tianwei of Singapore before reaching the semi-finals. She will need that form again to contend in Rio.

Tie Yana

Veteran Tie is competing in her fourth Olympics; having twice come close to a medal, this is surely the last chance for the oldest member of Hong Kong's squad. She has won medals in most of the major competitions – World Championships, World Cup, Asian Games, Asian Cup – with only Olympic hardware missing. She twice reached the singles quarter-finals (2004 and 2008) but will only feature in the team event in Rio to give more exposure to HK's up-and-coming youngsters. Her recent resurgent form, with a gold medal in the Hungarian Open early this year, will help the two younger members of the team to compete against the world’s best.

Tiffany Chan Tsz-ching

Tiffany Chan is one of only three amateurs in the Olympic golf competition, having stormed into contention by beating the pros at the Hong Kong Open, and later sealing her place in the world's top 60. Born and raised in Tuen Mun, Chan only took up the sport because her parents didn't want to leave her on her own when they visited the driving range. The champion golfer is a communications major at the University of Southern California and aims to turn pro after graduation.
