The latest projections from a 2016 study for usage of the bridge by 2030 expects 29,100 vehicles carrying 126,000 passengers to cross the bridge each day, a 25 per cent cut on projections publicised at the beginning of the project in 2009.

Car owners must apply for permits to use the bridge. Normal passengers can choose car or coach services, or get a 24-hour shuttle bus between border crossings. Travelers will need to pass immigration twice. On the bridge, vehicles will drive on the right hand side and pay tolls in Chinese Yuan.

A 55km bridge – among the world's longest – has been built across the Pearl River estuary linking Hong Kong, Macau and the mainland Chinese city of Zhuhai. Vehicles transfer between the bridge and an underwater tunnel at two artificial islands about 6km apart.

Hong Kong's contribution to the total project has ballooned to a whopping HK$120 billion, which includes building roads, islands and its share of the main bridge costs. The total cost from all three parties has not been disclosed.
