Hongkongers headed to polling stations on Sunday to elect 90 lawmakers, with voting wrapping up at 11.30pm and the ballot counting completed the next morning.

Authorities earlier mounted an unprecedented all-out push to boost voter turnout until the deadliest blaze to affect the city in decades ripped through a housing estate just 12 days before the poll.

As residents mourn the loss of at least 159 lives in the Tai Po inferno, all eyes were on whether the tragedy would move people to cast their ballots or dampen the mood.

The turnout for Sunday's Legco election at 31.9 per cent, an increase of 1.7 percentage points from 2021. But the total number of registered voters who cast their ballot dropped by 33,000 compared with the previous poll.

Here is what you need to know about the candidates.
