Saint Augustine once said “the world is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page”. Of course, he didn’t have to deal with passports, fret over how to apply for a visa, or shop for flights. This feature shows which places are most accessible, depending on your passport or location, and how much it will cost you to visit. Just select a country or region

The best place to be a traveller
The best place to be a traveller
If you hold an Italian, Spanish or French passport then you’re in luck. Those are the top three countries from which to travel. Passport holders in those places are privileged with a combination of cheap flights, plentiful destinations and the most countries offering access with no visa requirements
HOW THEY SCORED
Air tickets to destinations costing less than US$100 got a country 10 points, while destinations costing less than US$500 to fly to scored it 5 points each, with 2 points for each destination available. Visa-free destinations earned 15 points each. That means a country could score up to 17 points for fares and 15 points for visa-free access for each destination available

About the data and project
This project is based on data from passport.org and the service Google Flights. It visualises international relations by showing how easy, or difficult, it is for each country's citizens to travel abroad
Average fares beween places are based on four different travel requests between those places using Google Flights, for the month of August. The search parameters were for the lowest fare available for a one-way flight between capital cities (or the closest airport to the capital if it does not receive international flights)
All fares and passport ranks may change after publication.

This project is based on data available from different sources on the web. The data collected and organised here is available by clicking this link. The complete spreadsheet has about 80,400 entries for each country
