About

The Legislative Council elections on September 4 mark a turning point in Hong Kong’s political history, with a record 153 candidate-lists* aiming for 58 out of the 70 seats** and a fifth of incumbents, mostly veteran lawmakers, making way for a younger generation.  It is also the last showdown between the pan-democratic and the pro-establishment blocs before the city’s chief executive is elected in March.  All eyes will be on the localist candidates, some of whom advocate independence or self-determination, and whether they can claw away votes from the base of the established parties – or even take part at all.  At issue is a new ruling by the Electoral Affairs Commission, being challenged in the courts, that candidates must sign a form declaring Hong Kong to be an inseparable part of China.

*The Electoral Affairs Commission has yet to publish a list of validly nominated candidates.  This page shows all those who have submitted their bids.
**Twelve seats, all of them in the functional constituency, will be returned uncontested.
